Using uBlock to Block Ads? Here are the best filters to use

ublock origin

A lot of websites on the internet are now infested with intrusive adware ads, popups, scamwares, spywares, tracking cookies and harmful scripts which makes using a good ad blocking program essential. Users should be able to enforce their own content-filtering choices and now they can with uBlock origin browser extension and its extensive list of filters and settings.

What is uBlock Origin?

uBlock origin is a browser extension created by developer Raymond Hill that serves as a multi-purpose blocker e.g., blocking 3rd-party servers and scripts but is mostly used for ad blocking. It is available in Firefox, Safari, Chrome, Chromium, Edge, and Opera. Before proceeding, I recommend you to first read ‘How to use uBlock Origin and Its settings‘ for some basic know-how.

Best uBlock Origin Filter Settings

uBlock origin extension has an easy to use point-and-click user interface. By default, it comes with powerful 3rd-party filters that will block almost all of the ads on your device. You can change your filter settings by clicking on uBlock origin icon in your browser and then clicking on the gear icon. From there move to ‘3rd-party filters’ tab and here you can see all the filters that you are using. uBlock origin has been divided into four blocking modes, each blocking mode has its own distinct filters.

  • uBlock filters
  • EasyList

ublock origin blocking modes comparison

As you can see in the chart above different modes have different performance. If you are a regular internet user, Easy mode is the perfect balance between usability and performance and I recommend going with Easy mode and some additional custom filters. This will block ads on almost all websites and will not break websites which is not the case with other modes.

Easy mode is enabled by default. I also recommend adding an Anti-Adblock Killer filter to uBlock origin filters. This will make sure that your Ad-Blocker stays active when you visit a website and it asks you to disable it.

You can get Anti-Adblock Killer filter and other 3rd-Part filters such as ‘NoCoin’ (blocks cryptocurrency mining) from here. Remember to read the description before adding it, otherwise, it may leave some websites broken.

How to add custom 3rd-party filters to uBlock Origin?

FilterLists is one of the best repositories to get all your 3rd-party filter lists from. Here’s how to add a filter from FilterLists.

  • To add the filter simply click on ‘Add’ next to the filter on FilterLists website. You can also view the list first by clicking on ‘View’ first.
  • After clicking the ‘Add’ button a dialog box will pop-up in your browser. Simply click on ‘OK’ to confirm adding the list to your adblocker.
  • That’s it. The list will now start appearing in the ‘3rd-party filters’ in the uBlock origin settings under the ‘Custom’ section.

To delete the custom filter list, simply click on the dustbin icon next to the filter.
